Richmond, California - 9/9/20

These photographs were taken on September 9th, 2020 in Richmond, California. I awoke at 10:00 am and my room was still completely dark, with a slight reddish glow behind the curtains. Horrified, I pulled them back to reveal a blood-red sky over our backyard. Since 2017 we in the Bay Area have been used to poor air quality in the wildfire season, but this was the first time the smoke blocked out the sun completely. I rode my bike first around my neighborhood, and then to Miller-Knox Regional Shoreline Park (on the San Francisco Bay), stopping along the way to shoot. I’ve always been a huge fan of mixed light and abandoned landscapes. In the next hour the sky’s color shifted to a dusty pink and then a peach color. Seeing this beautiful imagery was a way for me to process my feelings about the fires and the way our climate and our world is changing.

All of these photos were shot between 11am and 2pm.
